Part 5: Common Sideloading Errors & Fixes

Even veterans hit walls. Here is the troubleshooting hall of fame: bonelab sideload

| Error | Cause | Fix | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | "Files not found" in SideQuest | You didn't enable Developer Mode. | Reboot headset and toggle Dev Mode in the phone app again. | | Game crashes on startup | Conflicting mods or outdated LemonLoader. | Delete the Mods folder. Reinstall LemonLoader fresh. | | Avatar loads as "Missing" | The mod requires a specific BoneLib version. | Download the exact version of BoneLib the mod author specifies. | | Sideloaded mod doesn't appear | You put the .dll in the wrong folder. | Ensure the mod is inside ...\files\Mods\ not ...\files\. | | PC doesn't recognize Quest | Bad cable or USB port. | Try a USB 3.0 port and a short, high-quality cable. | Here’s a technical write-up on sideloading in BoneLab

4.2. Locate BoneLab’s Mod Directory

The game stores mods at:
/sdcard/Android/data/com.StressLevelZero.BoneLab/files/Mods/ Part 5: Common Sideloading Errors & Fixes Even

On some versions, mod.io downloads go to: /sdcard/Modio/Mods/ — but sideloaded mods belong in the Mods folder inside the game’s data directory.

Troubleshooting common issues

  • Game crashes on launch: remove recently added mod, restore backup, check for required loaders or dependencies.
  • Missing textures/models: ensure you copied the full folder structure; check console/log for path errors.
  • Conflicts between mods: disable mods one-by-one to isolate; look for known incompatibilities in mod descriptions.
  • Performance drops: some mods add heavy assets or physics—try lowering graphics or uninstalling the mod.

Tools and utilities that help

  • Mod managers (community-built): streamline installs, enable/disable mods, and track conflicts.
  • Version tracking: keep a small spreadsheet or note with mod names and versions.
  • Backup utilities: zip your save folders automatically before testing new mods.

4. Placement

Read the mod developer’s instructions carefully. Typically, you will drag the extracted .dll file into the Mods folder you located in Step 2. Some complex mods may come with an automatic installer or require you to place asset bundles into specific sub-folders.

3. Version Control & Downgrading

Sometimes a Bonelab patch breaks your favorite mods. When you sideload, you can keep a local archive of mod versions that work. The in-game downloader always grabs the latest version (which might be broken).
