Part 4: How to Install Expedition OVA on VirtualBox (For Lab/Learning)

1. Download and install Oracle VirtualBox (latest version).
2. Import the OVA:
   • Open VirtualBox → File → Import Appliance.
   • Click the folder icon → select your .ova file.
   • Click Next.
3. Appliance Settings:
   • You can tweak RAM/CPU here. Minimum: 4096 MB RAM, 2 CPUs.
   • Ensure “Reinitialize the MAC address of all network cards” is checked (prevents conflicts).
   • Click Import.
4. Network Settings (Important):
   • Right-click the imported VM → Settings → Network.
   • Adapter 1: Enable → Attached to “Bridged Adapter” (so Expedition gets an IP on your LAN).
   • Alternatively, use NAT with port forwarding if you only need local access.
5. Start the VM and follow the same static IP steps from Part 3.

Prerequisites

Before beginning, ensure you have:

• A Palo Alto Networks Support Account with access to the Customer Support Portal.
• A supported hypervisor (VMware ESXi, VMware Workstation, or VMware Fusion).
• Sufficient resources allocated for the VM (Minimum: 4 vCPUs, 8GB RAM, 100GB Disk).

1. Update Expedition to the Latest Version

Inside the web UI, go to Admin → System Update → Check for Updates. Apply any available patches. Power on the newly created VM

7. Post-Install Validation

• Check service status:

• Test connectivity to firewalls (SSH / API)
• Upload a sample firewall config to confirm migration readiness

Phase 1: Deploy the OVF/OVA Template

1. Log into vSphere Client (HTML5 or desktop client).
2. Right-click on your Datacenter or Cluster (or a specific ESXi host).
3. Select “Deploy OVF Template” .
4. Source: Choose “Local file” , click “Browse” , and select the downloaded .ova file. Click Next.
5. Name and Folder: Give the VM a meaningful name (e.g., PA-Expedition-01). Select a destination folder/datacenter. Click Next.
6. Compute Resource: Select the ESXi host or cluster where the VM will run. Click Next.
7. Review Details: Verify the OVA template information (product: Expedition, version, size). Click Next.
8. Storage: Select the datastore with sufficient space. For Virtual Disk Format, choose Thin Provision (saves space) or Thick Provision (better performance). Click Next.
9. Network Mapping: Map the OVA’s source network (usually “VM Network” or “eth0”) to a destination VM Network Port Group in your environment. Ensure this network has DHCP or will allow a static IP later.
10. Ready to Complete: Review all settings. Check the box “Power on after deployment” (optional, but recommended). Click Finish.

Deployment takes 1–3 minutes depending on storage speed.
