He’s in remission now. The doctor’s letter says the prognosis is good. But nothing is guaranteed. He told me that if I want to leave, he’d understand. He gave me an out. Again.
I looked at that calendar on his wall. All those blue X’s—the lonely days. And the gold stars. Us.
I tore off a piece of paper from his notebook and wrote: “I’m not going anywhere. But from now on, no more solo battles. We’re a team.”
He cried. Real tears this time. And so did I. Relationship Drama: Emily finds herself entangled in a
Diary, I came here tonight to write a goodbye. Instead, I’m writing a beginning.
I love him. I haven’t said it to his face yet. But I’m saying it here, to you, in ink that won’t wash away.

Emily’s Diary – Episode 22, Part 2 The Space Between Goodbye and Silence
Entry Date: October 17th
The rain didn’t stop for three days. I remember because I counted. Not the hours—those blurred into one long exhale—but the sound of it against my window. Tap. Tap. Pause. Like someone trying to knock but too afraid to enter. That was me, I realized. That was exactly me.
When we left off, I had just closed the door on the last person I ever thought I’d walk away from. Not with a slam. Not with tears loud enough to echo down the stairwell. Just a soft, deliberate click. The kind of sound you make when you know you’re not coming back.
His name was Jake. And for two years, he was my gravity.
The Morning After
I woke up at 6:14 AM to a phone screen full of unanswered texts. Fourteen of them. Three missed calls. The first few were angry. Then confused. Then strangely soft, as if he had forgotten why I left in the first place and was already rewriting the fight into something smaller, something he could carry.
“Emily, come on. You’re being dramatic.” “Can we at least talk?” “I’m outside your building. It’s cold.” “Please.”
I turned the phone face down and stared at the ceiling crack that looked like a question mark. That crack had been there since I moved in. I’d never fixed it. Maybe because I liked having something in my life that didn’t pretend to have answers.
The Diary Entry That Started It All
I’ve kept a diary since I was twelve. Leather-bound, lock-and-key, the kind you buy at airport bookstores when you’re pretending to be the kind of person who has her life together. Episode 22 started on a Tuesday. That was the day I wrote:
“I don’t think he sees me anymore. He sees a version of me that agrees with him. And I’m tired of being a ghost in my own love story.”
I didn’t plan to write that. It just came out, like blood from a small cut you didn’t know you had. And once it was on paper, I couldn’t unsee it. That’s the danger of diaries. They don’t let you lie for long.
Part 1 of Episode 22 was about the fight. The one at his apartment, after his work dinner, when he told me I was “too much” for asking why he never introduced me to his new colleagues. Too much. Two words that weigh nothing but somehow crushed my ribs anyway.
The Silence (Part 2)
So here we are. Part 2. And nothing happens.
That’s the thing no one tells you about the moments after a decision like this. The movies make it look like a montage—you delete his number, you eat ice cream, you cut your hair, you dance in your underwear. But real life? Real life is quieter. Real life is staring at a mug of cold coffee for forty-five minutes because you forgot you made it.
I spent the first day cleaning. Not the joyful kind. The surgical kind. I scrubbed the bathroom grout with an old toothbrush. I alphabetized my spices. I folded my socks into perfect little rectangles. Because if I couldn’t control him, I could at least control the second drawer of my dresser.
The Call That Didn’t Come
By day two, I started imagining things. His ringtone. His shadow under the door. The way he used to leave his boots by my heater so they’d be warm in the morning. I caught myself reaching for my phone to text him a meme—something stupid about cats or coffee—and then I remembered. There was no “us” to send memes to anymore.
My best friend Mia called at noon. She didn’t say “I told you so,” even though she had, twice, over sangria last spring. Instead, she said: “Are you still you?”
I didn’t know how to answer that. Because parts of me had been shaped around him. My Saturday mornings (his pancakes). My vocabulary (I started saying “actually” like he did). The way I laughed—shorter now, less full, because he once said my real laugh was “a lot.”
I told Mia I was fine. She knew I was lying. She said she’d come over with Thai food anyway.
The Flashback
I found the ticket stubs while reorganizing my nightstand. Two of them. A movie we saw last February—some forgettable rom-com where the leads ended up together despite every logical reason not to. On the back of one stub, in his handwriting: “Emily + Jake. Forever starts here.”
I laughed. Not because it was funny. Because forever had ended on a Tuesday, over undercooked chicken and a comment about my career being “cute.”
Cute. Another small word that broke something.
The Third Day
By the third morning, the rain stopped. The sun came out, aggressive and cheerful, like it hadn’t been hiding for seventy-two hours. I opened my window. The air smelled like wet asphalt and possibility—two things I didn’t trust.
I wrote in my diary again. First time since the fight.
“October 17th. I still love him. That’s the worst part. Love doesn’t leave when you close the door. It just changes shape. Right now, it feels like a bruise—tender when pressed, but proof that something happened. I don’t know if I’ll ever stop loving him. But I do know I stopped losing myself today. And that’s not nothing.”
The Unanswered Question
He never did come upstairs that night. I checked the window once—just once—around 2 AM on day one. His car was there. Engine off. Him sitting in the driver’s seat, looking at my building like it was a language he forgot how to read. Then he drove away.
Part of me wanted to run after him. The same part that still reaches for the light switch even when the power’s out. But I stayed. I stayed because Episode 22 isn’t about him leaving. It’s about me staying.
Tonight
It’s 9:47 PM now. Mia is on my couch, wrapped in a blanket that smells like lavender and bad decisions. She’s watching some reality show about people baking cakes that look like other things. I’m sitting in the kitchen, writing this by the light of the stove hood.
I haven’t deleted his number yet. I haven’t thrown away the ticket stubs. I haven’t stopped hoping, a little, that he’ll show up with a real apology—not the kind that blames me for being “too much,” but the kind that says I was wrong. I see you. Stay.
But hope is not a plan. And love is not a leash.
The Last Line
I’ll end this episode the way I end all my hardest entries: with a question I can’t answer yet.
What happens when the person you love most is the person you have to walk away from to save yourself?
I don’t know. But for the first time in two years, I’m going to find out alone. And maybe—just maybe—that’s the bravest thing I’ve ever written.
