The Verdict
Score: 6/10 (as a FIFA game) | 9/10 (as a PSP artifact)
FIFA 16 on PSP is not good by modern standards. It’s clunky, shallow, and missing 90% of what makes the current series tick. But it is complete. It is a full, functional, portable football game from an era when EA still bothered to ship a physical UMD for a dying platform.
Playing it now feels like finding an old mixtape in a thrift store. The graphics are fuzzy. The commentary (Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend) repeats the same three lines. But the heart is there.
It is the last world-class striker to leave the pitch before the lights went out on the PSP.
Final thought: If you own a PS Vita, you can play this via backwards compatibility. And honestly? It’s more fun than FIFA 24 on Switch.
Have a dusty PSP in a drawer? Charge it up, find a copy of FIFA 16, and play one match as Arsenal vs. Leicester. Just don’t expect VAR.
Tips and Tricks:
- Master the basics: Familiarize yourself with the control layout and practice basic movements like dribbling, passing, and shooting.
- Use the right players: Choose players with high stats in their respective positions to increase your chances of success.
- Play to your strengths: Focus on your team's strengths, whether it's speedy wingers or powerful strikers.
- Defend smart: Use the "contain" feature to keep opponents at bay and jockey for position.
- Take shots wisely: Aim for the corners and use different types of shots (e.g., finesse, driven) to beat goalkeepers.
Game Modes:
- Ultimate Team (FUT): Build and manage your own team, competing in tournaments and online matches.
- Career Mode: Manage a team through multiple seasons, making transfers and tactical decisions.
Other Tips:
- Save frequently: Regularly save your progress to avoid losing data.
- Experiment with tactics: Try different formations and player positions to find what works best for you.
Hope these tips help you enjoy playing FIFA 16 on PSP!
Historically, FIFA 14 was the final official entry in the series released for the PSP. By the time FIFA 16 launched in September 2015, EA had shifted focus to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, even skipping the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS.
Consequently, any version of FIFA 16 you find for the PSP is a fan-made modification, typically built upon the engine of FIFA 14 or Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) 2014. Core Features of FIFA 16 PSP Mods
Modders work tirelessly to keep the legacy hardware relevant by injecting modern features into the classic engines:
Updated Rosters: These ISO files feature fully updated transfers, including legends like Messi and Ronaldo in their era-appropriate squads.
Enhanced Graphics: Many "FIFA 16" mods for PSP (often played on Android via the PPSSPP emulator) include high-definition textures, updated kits, and "ultra-realistic" grass textures that push the PSP's hardware to its limits.
New Game Modes: Some versions integrate specific tournaments like the UEFA Champions League or the FIFA World Cup, which were originally absent from the base handheld versions.
Retro Integration: Unique patches allow players to experience historical football, with some mods covering eras from the 1880s to the 2020s within the FIFA 16 framework. Gameplay Mechanics
Because these are mods, the underlying physics often reflect the "impact engine" or older handheld logic: ENTIRE Football History in ONE FIFA Mod…
The Missing Features: What You Won’t Get
If you come to FIFA 16 PSP expecting a modern experience, you will be disappointed. EA stripped back more than they added.
- No Women’s Football: FIFA 16 on PS4 famously introduced women’s national teams. The PSP version has zero female players.
- No Fut Draft: Not a thing.
- No Training Drills: You learn by playing, not by practicing.
- Outdated Rosters: Here is the kicker. Because EA stopped updating the PSP version immediately after launch, the Summer 2015 transfers are not fully present. If you want Kevin De Bruyne at Manchester City or Anthony Martial at Manchester United, you have to manually edit the squads (which is tedious).
- No 3D Grass: The pitch is a flat green texture with a grid pattern.
How to Get FIFA 16 PSP Today
Because the PSP is discontinued and the PSN store for PSP was shut down, you have two options:
Legitimate (Physical): Search eBay, Mercado Libre (Latin America), or CEX for a used UMD. Prices range from $5 to $20. You need a working PSP 1000, 2000, 3000, or GO.
Digital Emulation (Moral Gray Area): Since EA no longer sells the game, many players download the "FIFA 16 PSP ISO" from ROM sites. You will need:
- The PPSSPP emulator.
- The ISO file (approx 1.2GB).
- A device to play it on (Android phone, PC, Mac, or a modded PS Vita).
