حضرت یعقوب علیہ السلام (جو اسرائیل کے نام سے بھی مشہور ہیں) کے بارہ بیٹے تھے۔ ان میں دو بیٹے یوسف اور بنیامین ایک ماں سے تھے، جبکہ باقی دس ایک دوسری ماں سے۔ حضرت یوسف علیہ السلام بہت حسین و جمیل تھے، اور ان کے والد انہیں سب سے زیادہ محبت کرتے تھے۔

جب بھائی واپس جانے لگے تو یوسف نے اپنے خادم سے کہا کہ بنیامین کے سامان میں شاہی پیالہ رکھ دو۔ پھر پیچھا کر کے الزام لگایا کہ کسی نے شاہی پیالہ چرایا ہے۔ تلاشی میں پیالہ بنیامین کے سامان سے نکلا۔ بھائی گھبرا گئے۔ یوسف نے کہا کہ بنیامین کو بطور غلام روک لیا جائے گا۔
