- Current Firmware: Check your current firmware version by going to Settings > About tablet > Firmware version. Take note of the current version.
- Backup: Backup your important data, including files, contacts, and SMS, to prevent losses during the update process.
- Charge: Ensure your device is fully charged or has at least 50% battery life.
Update Methods
Huawei provides two methods to update the MediaPad X1 7.0 to Lollipop: huawei mediapad x1 70 update lollipop install
5. Post-Installation Analysis and Limitations
Upon successful boot into Android 5.0 Lollipop, the user will notice significant UI changes due to the shift to Material Design and the removal of Huawei’s Emotion UI in favor of stock Android (if using a standard Custom ROM).
5.1 Performance Gains
- ART Runtime: Application performance generally improves due to ahead-of-time (AOT) compilation.
- UI Fluidity: Lollipop’s rendering engine optimizations benefit the 1920x1200 display.
5.2 Known Issues Given that these updates are community-developed and not official, several bugs are endemic to the MediaPad X1 Lollipop builds:
- Camera HAL: Incomplete hardware abstraction layer (HAL) support often results in "green screen" artifacts or focus failures.
- Deep Sleep: Some builds fail to enter deep sleep mode properly, leading to battery drain despite the large cell capacity.
- Video Decoding: The proprietary Vivante GPU drivers are notoriously difficult to integrate with Android 5.0 media frameworks, often resulting in hardware acceleration glitches in video playback apps.
4.1 Initial Setup
- Skip Google sign-in initially to reduce lag.
- Enable Developer options again (tap build number 7 times).
- Go to Developer options → set Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, Animator duration scale to 0.5x or off.
2. Prerequisites and Preparations
1. Introduction
Step 4: Wipe the System (Crucial!)
In TWRP:
- Tap Wipe → Advanced Wipe.
- Select: Dalvik/ART Cache, System, Data, Cache.
- Do NOT wipe Internal Storage if your ROM is stored there. But since we’re using an SD card, wiping internal is safe.
- Swipe to wipe.
Known risks:
- No working camera, GPS, or RIL (cellular) in some builds.
- Buggy Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
- No further development – most XDA threads are dead since 2016.
- Brick risk if firmware is mismatched.
9. Known Issues & Fixes
No custom ROM is perfect. Here are known bugs with CM12.1 on MediaPad X1 and how to fix them:
| Issue | Workaround/Fix | |-------|----------------| | Screen rotation lag | Disable “Auto-rotate” and use an app like “Rotation Control”. | | Video recording crashes | Use a third-party camera app (e.g., Open Camera) set to 720p. | | Battery percentage not accurate | Calibrate battery: Drain to 0%, charge to 100% while off. | | No deep sleep | Install “Greenify” and hibernate background apps. | | Mobile data disconnects | Set APN manually. Go to Settings → Mobile networks → Access Point Names → Reset to default. | Preparation
What works perfectly: Calls, SMS, 4G/3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, MTP file transfer, YouTube, Netflix (Lollipop compatible versions).
