Unit Install [patched]: Icom Ui7 Am Fm
The garage smelled of old copper and sawdust, a familiar scent for Elias, but today it was mixed with the sharp, clean plastic smell of a brand-new box. Resting on his workbench was the Icom UI-7 AM/FM unit, a sleek piece of tech that promised to bring the world back into his vintage rig.
Elias had been running a bare-bones setup for years, focusing on pure VHF, but he missed the crackle of distant AM talk shows and the crystal-clear FM music that filled the gaps between long hauls.
He started by disconnecting the power—safety first, even if his excitement tempted him to skip it. He slid the main transceiver out of its mounting bracket, revealing the empty expansion slot on the rear panel. It looked like an invitation.
The UI-7 was a masterpiece of compact engineering. Elias carefully aligned the multi-pin connector, feeling that satisfying, muffled click as it seated into the motherboard. He tightened the two small retaining screws, ensuring the unit wouldn't budge even on the washboard roads of the high desert. icom ui7 am fm unit install
"Moment of truth," he muttered, reconnecting the antenna lead and snapping the power back on.
The display glowed to life. He toggled the mode button, and for the first time, the letters 'FM' flickered onto the screen. He spun the dial. Instantly, a local jazz station flooded the cabin, crisp and vibrant. He switched to AM, pulling in a weather broadcast from two counties over through a layer of nostalgic static.
The install had taken twenty minutes, but as Elias leaned back in his seat, listening to the smooth brass of a saxophone through his radio’s speakers, he knew his long drives were about to get a lot less lonely. The garage smelled of old copper and sawdust,
📲 Enabling the UI-7 in the Radio
After hardware installation, you must enable the unit via the menu:
Step 3: The Wiring (Crucial Step)
This is where people get confused. The UI-7 has a male 3.5mm mono plug dangling off the back.
- Do not plug this into your Icom’s external speaker jack yet.
- You have two options for audio:
- Radio Only: Plug the UI-7 cable directly into the back of your Icom body (EXT SP).
- Radio + Vehicle Audio (Passthrough): This is the "Pro" move. The UI-7 actually has a pigtail that allows you to splice into your vehicle's factory radio speaker wires. When you do this, the Icom audio plays through the dash, but your car radio will mute the Icom when music plays. (Honestly? Just plug it into the Icom. It’s cleaner.)
The Power Question: The UI-7 is passive. It does not need 12V power. It is just a speaker. Do not try to wire red/black leads if you see them (older models had lighting; new ones don't). 📲 Enabling the UI-7 in the Radio After
Step 3: DC Power Connection (12V)
The UI7 requires a clean, dedicated 12V DC supply. Do not share a ground wire with a windlass or bilge pump.
- Red wire (+12V): Connect to a switched source (via the helm ignition or a dedicated breaker). Why? Because the UI7 draws a small current even in standby. If connected directly to the battery, it will drain it over 2–3 weeks.
- Black wire (Ground): Run to your common DC negative bus bar. Do not ground to the hull or engine block in a fiberglass boat.
Fuse: Install a 1A or 2A inline fuse (as per Icom specs) within 6 inches of the power source.
