Before discussing co-op, one must understand the modding scene. Unlike Skyrim or The Witcher 3, Shadow of War was not built with modding tools. It runs on Monolith’s proprietary Firebird engine, a derivative of the LithTech engine. Consequently, mods have traditionally been limited to:
For years, true gameplay modifications—let alone multiplayer—were considered impossible. The Firebird engine handles networking only for the bare-bones leaderboards and fortress data downloads. There is no native peer-to-peer or server-authoritative architecture for two Talions to share a screen.
