The next set is bubblegum pink. A bathtub full of plastic gumballs. The brief: “High fashion meets toddler birthday party.” Nanyi dives in. Gumballs fly.

She makes a face—tongue out, eyes crossed. Then a fish face. Then she balances a gumball on the tip of her nose, stares at it cross-eyed until it falls. The photographer is cackling. She grabs two gumball halves from a prop bowl, sticks them to her front teeth like buck teeth, and waddles toward the lens like a deranged rabbit.

This is the silliness no one expects. The cold girl who hoarded jokes like contraband. She does a fake sneeze that sends a cascade of gumballs rolling across the floor. The crew is helpless with laughter. She grins—real, wide, a little chipped front tooth showing.

Part IV: HOT

The final look. Black leather harness over bare skin. Wet-look hair. Lipstick the color of a fresh bruise. The temperature in the room seems to rise.

The photographer whispers, “Give me the cold, but let the fire show through the ice.”

Nanyi closes her eyes. She thinks of a late-night argument, a hand held too tight, a promise broken and then kept. She thinks of wanting something so badly it aches behind the ribs. She opens her eyes.

The lens nearly cracks.

It’s not a pose. It’s a detonation. The hot is not in the clothes or the light. It’s in the contradiction—the sweet girl who went cold and kept the silliness as kindling, and now all of it is burning at once. She breathes. The camera breathes with her.
