To his horror, Winston watches the grave erupt. Mort Cinder climbs out, his neck still bearing the scar of the hangman’s noose.
Cinder is no zombie in the pop culture sense. He is a resurrected man, cursed to live through the worst moments of history. Throughout the anthology-like chapters, Winston becomes a "witness," traveling with Cinder to Ancient Rome, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Scottish Highlands, and the French Revolution.
