Disclaimer: Unlocking carrier-locked hardware often violates the Terms of Service of your internet provider. This guide is for educational purposes only. Modifying firmware or accessing restricted settings can "brick" (permanently damage) your device. Proceed at your own risk.

The Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway 31 (often branded as the Bell Home Hub 4000 or similar variants by AT&T and other ISPs) is a high-performance 5G router. Unlike older 4G modems where you could simply type in an unlock code, modern 5G gateways are locked down tightly via firmware and authentication keys.

Here is a guide on the current state of unlocking this device and the methods available.

The Good (Why you buy this)

1. Truly Unlocked (The main event)
Unlike the locked ISP versions (AT&T, Bell, etc.), this unit accepts SIM cards from T-Mobile, Verizon, Google Fi, or any international carrier. I swapped SIMs in 30 seconds—no unlock codes, no ADB hacks. It pulls APN settings automatically 90% of the time.

2. Insane Signal Hunting (External Antennas work)
The "FastMile" name is accurate. It has 4x4 MIMO internal antennas plus four external SMA ports (hidden under a rubber flap). I live in a fringe area (-115 dBm signal). I attached two external log-periodic antennas, and my speed went from 15 Mbps to 210 Mbps. You cannot do that with a Verizon cube.

3. Industrial Build (Mount it outside)
This is technically an outdoor gateway (IP65 rated). I have it mounted under my eaves. It handles Texas heat and rain fine. If you place it inside a window, the passive cooling means no fan noise.

4. Actual Ethernet Ports
Includes 2x Gigabit LAN ports and 1x 2.5GbE port (future-proofing). Most 5G hotspots only give you USB-C or one port.

Technical/advanced options (only if you accept risks)

Web/portal unlock (if available)

Some carriers provide an online unlock request:

  1. Log into the carrier account portal.
  2. Find “device unlock” or “unlock request” and submit IMEI and required details.
  3. Wait for confirmation (email/SMS) and follow the included steps to complete unlocking.

Method 1: Request an Unlock Code from Your Original Carrier (Free)

Legitimate and safest, but may be denied.

3. Salvage a "Dead" Device

If you cancel your service with the original carrier (e.g., T-Mobile Home Internet), they often demand the device back. If you bought it second-hand, it might be blacklisted from activation but still perfectly functional with another carrier's SIM.

4. Third-Party Unlocking Services (Paid)

If your carrier refuses to unlock, some third-party services claim to unlock Nokia Fastmile 31:

6. How to Check If Your Gateway Is Already Unlocked

  1. Insert a non-carrier SIM (different from original).
  2. Power on the gateway.
  3. Connect to web interface (192.168.12.1).
  4. Check status under Settings > Mobile Network > SIM Status.
    • If “SIM locked” or “Invalid SIM” appears → locked.
    • If connects to network → unlocked.
