pfSense CE 2.8.0: What You Need to Know About the AMD64 ISO GZ Update

As of early 2026, the pfSense Community Edition (CE) project has undergone significant changes. While pfSense CE 2.7.2 remains the last universally recommended stable release, development snapshots of the future 2.8.0 branch are available for testing. This piece focuses on the AMD64 ISO GZ package for that upcoming 2.8.0 release.

5. How to Use the ISO GZ

  1. Download the file from the official pfSense snapshot server (not third-party sites).
  2. Decompress: gunzip pfSense-CE-2.8.0-...-amd64.iso.gz
  3. Write the resulting .iso to a CD/DVD or use Rufus/Etcher to write it to a USB drive (ensure DD mode if using Rufus).
  4. Boot your target AMD64 machine from the media.
  5. Follow the standard pfSense installer – your old configuration can be restored at the end.

4. Test Gateway Monitoring

The default gateway monitoring IP (8.8.8.8) is heavily throttled now. Consider changing it to your ISP's DNS or 1.1.1.1 under System > Routing > Gateways > Edit. pfsensece280releaseamd64isogz upd

3. Validate WireGuard

Because the kernel module changed, old WireGuard tunnels might show "Interface down." pfSense CE 2

2. Reinstall Custom Packages

Third-party packages (Snort, Suricata, pfBlockerNG-devel) must be reinstalled. Download the file from the official pfSense snapshot
