Every Saturday (Shani’s day), pour mustard or sesame oil on a Shani idol or Shani Lingam while reciting: “Om Sham Shanaishcharaye Namah.” Scriptural reason: Oil reduces friction. You are symbolically reducing the friction of his planet’s slow movement through your life.
The scripture does not advocate bribery or fear. Instead, it prescribes logical remedies:
| Remedy | Reason | |--------|--------| | Feed crows (Shani’s vehicle) on Saturday | Crows represent Shani's messengers; feeding them creates goodwill | | Donate black items (sesame, urad dal, iron, black cloth) to the poor | Symbolically giving away ignorance and negative karma | | Recite Shani Stotra or Dasharatha Shani Stotra | King Dasharatha was saved from Shani's wrath by this hymn | | Worship Lord Hanuman | Hanuman freed Shani from Ravana's captivity; Hanuman protects devotees from harsh karma | | Practice truthfulness, service, and patience | These are the only permanent remedies; Shani blesses those who accept hardship without complaint | shani mahatmya in english verified
The essence of Shani Mahatmya is the Law of Action (Karma) . The scriptures state:
"Shani gives the results of one's deeds. He is the judge. If you have done good, you will get gold. If you have done evil, you will get sorrow." Shani Mahatmya: The Glory of Lord Shani 1
Unlike other deities who may forgive through devotion alone, Shani ensures the debt of karma is paid. However, the Mahatmya clarifies a critical point: Shani never harms an innocent person. His gaze (Drishti) only falls upon those whose karma requires correction.
The most verified stotra is the Shani Trayodash Stotra (found in the Brahmapurana): The Law of Karma: The text asserts that
“Nilanjana Samabhasam, Ravi Putram Yamagrajam, Chhaya Martanda Sambhutam, Tam Namami Shanaishcharam.” (I bow to Shani, who is like blue collyrium, the son of Ravi [Surya], the elder brother of Yama, born to Chhaya and Martanda [Surya]).
Chant this 108 times on Saturdays. It is said to reduce the intensity of Sade Sati within 40 days.
Before Lord Rama was born, King Dasharatha performed the Putrakameshti Yagna. However, a dark phase occurred when Shani entered the King’s 12th house (house of loss). The King’s treasury dried up, his enemies rose, and he suffered exile-like conditions. Realizing it was Shani’s Dhaiya (2.5-year transit), Dasharatha worshipped Shani with oil, black sesame, and iron. Shani appeared and said: “O King, your suffering is not punishment. It clears the karma that would have otherwise affected your son, Rama. Suffer a little now, so your son can be a perfect emperor later.” This shows Shani’s protective cruelty.
