welcome aboard

Ships of Hagoth is a digital-first literary magazine featuring creative nonfiction and theoretical essays by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Where other LDS-centric publications often look inward at the LDS tradition, we seek literary works that look outward through the curious, charitable lens of faith.

In 2025 and early 2026, the entertainment industry saw a massive resurgence driven by high-profile franchise sequels and original cinematic events. Walt Disney Studios reclaimed its position as the undisputed leader, while Warner Bros. and Universal solidified their status as the industry's other heavy hitters. Major Studios: Performance & Key Productions Dexter: Resurrection

Part 3: Major Independent & Niche Powerhouses

These studios may not be conglomerates but produce influential, often genre-defining work.

Part 2: The Streaming Disruptors – The New Popular Kids

The last decade has seen a seismic shift. Traditional box office is no longer the only metric of success. Streaming studios have become the most popular destinations for high-quality television and direct-to-consumer films.

Introduction: The Engine of Global Pop Culture

Entertainment studios are the powerhouses behind the movies you binge, the shows you obsess over, and the characters you quote. Today, the line between "traditional studio" and "tech streamer" has blurred. This guide breaks down the major players, their signature styles, and how they produce content.

Part 6: How to Follow & Engage With Studios

Walt Disney Studios: The Nostalgia Engine

When discussing popular entertainment studios, Disney is not just a participant; it is the sun in the solar system. Founded in 1923, Disney has mastered the art of vertical integration: animation, live-action, theme parks, and merchandising.

Key Productions That Broke the Mold:

Why they win: Disney owns Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm (Star Wars), and 20th Century Studios. They don't just make movies; they build "intergenerational touchstones."

IONS

We are hoping—for “one must needs hope”—for creative nonfiction, theoretical essays, and craft essays that seek radical new ways to explore and express theological ideas; that are, like Hagoth, “exceedingly curious.”

We favor creative nonfiction that can trace its lineage back to Michel de Montaigne. Whether narrative, analytical, or devotional, these essays lean ruminative, conversational, meandering, impressionistic, and are reluctant to wax didactic.

As for theoretical essays: we welcome work that playfully and charitably explores the wide world of arts & letters—especially works created from differing religious, non-religious, and even irreligious perspectives—through the peculiar lens of a Latter-day Saint.

We read and publish submissions as quickly as possible, and accept simultaneous submissions.

  • The Lion King (1994 & 2019): The 1994 version is the pinnacle of 2D animation. The 2019 "live-action" remake grossed over $1.6 billion, proving that nostalgia is a financially viable currency.
  • The Avengers: Endgame (2019): A culmination of 22 films. It became the highest-grossing film of all time for a period, demonstrating the power of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which Disney acquired in 2009.
  • Frozen (2013): A cultural tsunami. "Let It Go" wasn't just a song; it was a global earworm that generated over $1.3 billion at the box office and billions more in merchandise.

Why they win: Disney owns Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm (Star Wars), and 20th Century Studios. They don't just make movies; they build "intergenerational touchstones."
