Tips for the Novice Red Pilot

If you are jumping into a MiG-21 for the first time, here is the beginner’s checklist:

1. Stay Fast: Never drop below 400 knots IAS in a dogfight. The MiG-21 stalls badly below that speed.
2. Radar Management: The Sapfir radar (MiG-21/23) has poor look-down capability. Keep the enemy above you or on your level.
3. Missile Discipline: The AA-2 Atoll (R-3S) is a rear-aspect, heat-seeking missile. Do not fire it head-on against an F-4. Wait for the burner.
4. Learn the "Fulda" Terrain: Use the hills to mask your approach to NATO bases. Pop up from behind a ridge, drop your bombs, and run.
