3. The "Powers" System (Crucial Mechanic)
The new tactical bar allows you to spend accumulated Honor to influence the battlefield. Using these correctly separates novice players from experts.
7. Legacy and Availability
-
Digital availability:
Currently available on GOG.com (DRM-free, updated for modern Windows) and Steam (as part of Stronghold: Crusader HD plus Extreme as a separate launcher option).
Note: The “Stronghold: Crusader HD” release on Steam/GOG includes both the original and Extreme modes. Stronghold- Crusader Extreme -
Community:
Many hardcore fans prefer the original Crusader (or Crusader HD) because mods (e.g., Unofficial Crusader Patch, Crusader Extreme Ultimate) offer better performance than the official Extreme mode. -
Impact on series:
The “Extreme” concept was later incorporated into Stronghold 3 (2011) and Stronghold: Warlords (2021) as optional “extreme difficulty” settings, but never again as a standalone product. Digital availability: Currently available on GOG
The "Dual Economy" Trap
Do not fall for the idea of a perfect, symmetrical economy. You do not have time. Build a granary, a few wheat farms, and a baker. That is it. In Extreme, you will sustain your army via the Market more than production chains. Buy bread; sell weapons you pick up from raiding dead enemy siege weapons.
Reception and Legacy: A Curio, Not a Classic
Upon release, Stronghold: Crusader Extreme received mixed-to-negative reviews. Critics called it "lazy" (reusing assets), "broken" (pathfinding collapses), and "unbalanced" (trebuchets are irrelevant). Players were split: veterans of Crusader hated it for ruining the tactical depth; masochists and LAN-party enthusiasts loved it for the sheer absurdity. Community: Many hardcore fans prefer the original Crusader
However, history has been kinder. Extreme is now seen as the spiritual predecessor to the "horde mode" and "survival RTS" subgenres (e.g., They Are Billions, Diplomacy is Not an Option). It asked a question few RTS games dare: What if the enemy had no respect for your time or your CPU?
Furthermore, Extreme inadvertently highlighted the core tension of the Stronghold series: the conflict between the castle architect (who wants elegant, efficient keeps) and the warlord (who wants to drown enemies in blood). Extreme chooses the warlord, violently and without apology.
3. New Features Compared to Original Stronghold: Crusader
A. The Tactical Powers
- Arrow Volley: Rains arrows on a target area.
- Use Case: Decimating unarmored units (Arab Archers, Slaves) or softening up heavily armored units before they reach your walls. It has a cooldown; save it for the moment the enemy blobs up.
- Rock Volley: Drops boulders from the sky.
- Use Case: Anti-armor. This is your primary counter to the "Lords vs. Lords" battles where enemies send waves of Knights. It crushes shields and HP instantly.
- Fire: Spreads flames in a targeted zone.
- Use Case: Denial of area. Drop this on your own gatehouse if it is being overwhelmed, or on the enemy's siege equipment. It causes panic and breaks formations.
3.3 Extreme Skirmish Mode
- Modified skirmish mode with more aggressive AI lords.
- AI receives economic bonuses and builds faster.
- Maps are unchanged from the original, but unit limits per lord are increased.
