Leider ist nicht immer zuverlässig zu ermitteln, ob die Sprachpakete vollständig, teilweise oder gar nicht implementiert wurden: Ja an dieser Stelle bedeutet, dass Sie eine deutschsprachige Version erwarten können, Nein, dass mit ziemlicher Sicherheit keine zur Verfügung steht. Sie werden hier auch manchmal ein (nicht bekannt) vorfinden.

Release-Modell

Hier werden die Begriffe Fixed Release, Rolling Release und Semi-rolling Release verwendet:

Fixed Release bedeutet, dass die ursprünglich installierte Version des Betriebssystems unverändert bleibt. In diesem Fall gewährleistet der Distributor nur, Fehlerbehebungen und sicherheitsrelevante Aktualisierungen bereitzustellen.

Rolling Release bedeutet, dass das System über den integrierten Aktualisierungsdienst kontinuierlich auf dem neuesten Stand gehalten wird. Dieses Modell birgt natürlich auch das (geringe) Risiko, dass mal eine Komponente eine Zeitlang (bis der Fehler mit dem nächsten Update-Zyklus behoben wird) nicht wunschgemäß funktioniert.

Semi-rolling Release ist mehr oder weniger (es gibt verschiedene Auslegungen zu diesem Konzept) eine Synthese der beiden vorgenannten Modelle. Die übliche Methodik ist ein fortlaufendes Update system- und sicherheitskritischer Komponenten und eine weit geringere Häufigkeit der Aktualisierung von weniger betriebswichtigen Teilen, wie etwa Anwendungsprogramme, die oft nur jährlich oder halbjährlich stattfindet.

Manche Distributionen bieten die Möglichkeit, zwischen verschiedenen Release-Modellen zu wählen. Beispielsweise ist openSUSE unter dem Beinamen Leap als statische Version (Fixed Release) und unter Tumbleweed als Rolling Release erhältlich. In solchen Fällen wird Fixed Release / Rolling Release angezeigt.

Herkunft

Das Land, in dem die Distribution entwickelt und gepflegt wird. In manchen Fällen, wenn die Mitglieder des Projektteams aus verschiedenen Ländern stammen, werden hier mehrere angeführt.


HINWEIS: Abgesehen von einigen wenigen Distributionen, die sich auf bestimmte sprachliche, nationale oder regionale Besonderheiten konzentrieren, ist die Herkunft kein qualitatives oder für die Nutzung relevantes Merkmal.

Preis

.. zeigt an, ob die Distribution frei erhältlich (Kostenlos) ist oder nur gegen eine Geldleistung genutzt werden kann. In einigen wenigen Fällen wird eine Registrierung verlangt.

Die überwiegende Mehrheit der bei uns referenzierten Distributionen sind kostenlos erhältlich und können ohne Einschränkungen für private ebenso wie für gewerbliche Zwecke eingesetzt werden.

Erstes Release

Diese Angabe präzise festzulegen ist nicht immer ganz einfach, weil die Begriffe "zum ersten Mal", "öffentlich" und "freigegeben" sehr unterschiedlich interpretiert werden.

Dokumentation

Der Link zur Webseite, auf der die autorisierte Dokumentation veröffentlicht wird.

Als "Dokumentation" gelten Installationsanweisungen, Anleitungen für die ersten Schritte, Hinweise zur Behebung bekannter Probleme, ausführliche Handbücher für Benutzer und Administratoren aber auch eingehende technische Beschreibungen und ähnliche Informationsquellen - je nach Ausrichtung und Einsatzzweck der Distribution.

Der direkte Link zur Webseite, auf der die Installationsdatei(en) der Distribution zum Download angeboten werden.

Wenn die verlinkte Seite auf den ersten Blick keinen Bezug zu der jeweiligen Distribution aufweisen sollte, dann liegt das daran, dass die Downloads über einen Filehosting-Dienst (wie z.B. SourceForge oder GitHub ) angeboten werden.

Diese Hosting-Services stellen meist auch die Infrastruktur bereit, mit deren Hilfe die Entwicklerteams ihre Arbeit koordinieren, dokumentieren und die Versionierung durchführen können.

Aktuelle Version

Die Nummer und das Veröffentlichungsdatum der aktuellen (Haupt-) Version. In manchen Fällen finden Sie an dieser Stelle in Klammern gesetzt noch eine weitere Versionsnummer. Diese bezeichnet die letzte Veröffentlichung eines alternativen Entwicklungszweigs, beispielsweise eine ältere Version mit Langzeitunterstützung (LTS) o.ä.

Wird hier (Tägliche Snapshots) oder (Wöchentliche Snapshots) angezeigt, dann werden die betreffenden Installationsmedien kontinuierlich erneuert und online gestellt. "Kontinuierlich" bedeutet üblicherweise täglich oder wöchentlich, manchmal jedoch auch in unregelmäßigen Intervallen. Diese Form der Versionierung verfolgen wir aus verständlichen Gründen nicht!

Nicht jede Aktualisierung führt zwangsläufig zu einem neuen Release bzw. zu einer neuen Version. Die Möglichkeiten, ein modulares Betriebssystem über eine Online-Verbindung aktuell zu halten, sind sehr vielfältig und von der Arbeitsweise der Entwickler abhängig. Überdies kündigen nicht alle Projekte neue Releases an oder informieren nachträglich über öffentliche Kanäle. Deswegen kann es passieren, dass wir neue Veröffentlichungen nicht sofort registrieren - was bedeutet, dass diese Information keinen Rückschluß auf die Aktualität, auf die Häufigkeit von Aktualisierungen oder auf den Status der Distribution zulässt.


HINWEIS: Distributionen, die als Rolling Release verteilt werden, erfahren nur selten (oder nie) eine Änderung ihrer Versionsnummer. Die Angaben in diesem Feld stehen dann für die Veröffentlichung eines sogenannten Snapshots, also wenn das Installationsmedium auf den aktuellen Stand gebracht und zum Download bereitgestellt wurde.

Status

.. zeigt mit Aktiv (grün), Ruhend (orange) oder Eingestellt (rot) an, ob die Distribution aktiv weiterentwickelt, gepflegt und gewartet wird bzw. ob das Projektteam Entwicklung und Betreuung beendet hat.

Wenn nach Ablauf von 24 Monaten ein neues Release weder veröffentlicht noch angekündigt wurde, setzen wir den Status auf Ruhend. Ausgenommen, das Projekt verlautbart, dass die Entwicklung weiter fortgesetzt wird und eine neue Veröffentlichung erwartet werden kann.

Wenn nach Ablauf von 36 Monaten ein neues Release weder veröffentlicht noch angekündigt wurde und die Entwicklung keine Fortschritte erkennen lässt, setzen wir den Status auf Eingestellt. Das geschieht natürlich auch, wenn eine offizielle Verlautbarung das Ende der Entwicklungsarbeiten bekannt gibt.


Eingestellt oder Ruhend bedeutet nicht, dass man von der Verwendung einer solchen Distribution grundsätzlich Abstand nehmen muss. Viele der nicht mehr aktiven Projekte erfreuen sich noch Jahre nach der letzten Veröffentlichung größter Beliebtheit, weswegen die Download-Seiten in der Regel online bleiben. Meist handelt es sich dabei um Distributionen, die für besondere Zwecke geschaffen wurden, etwa für den Betrieb eines Multimedia Centers oder als Sammlung computerforensischer Anwendungen, für die funktionelle Verbesserungen vorerst nicht sinnvoll wären.

100% Freie Software

Diese Grafik wird eingeblendet, wenn die Distribution den Free System Distribution Guidelines (Richtlinien für freie Systemverteilungen) der Free Software Foundation (FSF) entspricht.

Distributionen, die diese strengen Richtlinien vollständig erfüllen, werden in die Referenzliste der FSF aufgenommen. Das kann als "Gütesiegel" verstanden werden, mit dem Anwender die Gewißheit haben, dass die Distribution nur vollständig quelloffene Software enthält (d.h. keine proprietäre und/oder nur als Binärcode vorliegende Programme oder Programmteile). Das gilt in demselben Maß für Firmware und Gerätetreiber, weshalb solche Distributionen den GNU Linux-libre -Kernel einsetzen.

Init Freedom

Diese Grafik wird zu Linux-Distributionen eingeblendet, die ein (oder mehrere) der traditionellen init-Systeme anbieten und nicht ausschließlich den umstrittenen Prozessmanager systemd implementieren.

Das systemd-Projekt polarisiert die Community in zunehmendem Ausmaß. Seit Veröffentlichung der ersten Version im Jahr 2010 ist es mehrmals zu Flame Wars und Shitstorms, sowohl von Befürwortern als auch von Kritikern ausgehend, gekommen. Die Entscheidung von Debian, SysVinit durch systemd zu ersetzen, führte 2014 zu monatelangen und sehr emotionell geführten Diskussionen und schließlich zu einer Spaltung, aus der das Devuan-Projekt hervorgegangen ist.

Die Liste der Kritikpunkte an systemd ist sehr lang. Die wichtigsten werden in dem Wikipedia-Artikel über das init-System genannt, das mittlerweile auch andere Aufgaben als nur das Prozessmanagement erfüllt - womit es auch eine grundlegende Regel der Unix-Philosophie ("Ein Programm soll nur ein Problem lösen, das aber möglichst gut") verletzt.

Während die meisten Linux-Distributionen auf systemd umgestellt haben, hat sich eine Front gegen diesen Trend gebildet. Einige seit Jahren gut bekannte, aber auch zahlreiche neue Projekte setzen auf die bewährten init-Systeme und versuchen mit Initiativen und Kampagnen, vor den vielfältigen technischen Problemen zu warnen, die die gesamte Linux-Community in eine schwierige Situation führen könnten.

Das Jahr, in dem die betreffende Distribution den Status Eingestellt erhalten hat.
