Important Note: The UMAX Astra 5800 is a very old scanner (late 1990s / early 2000s). UMAX no longer provides official Windows 10 drivers. However, you can still make it work using a built-in Windows driver or third-party software.

Option 4: Virtual Machine (For Advanced Users)

Install Windows XP inside VirtualBox or VMware (free), then:

  1. Pass through the USB scanner to the VM.
  2. Install original UMAX drivers inside XP.
  3. Scan → save to shared folder.

Method 2: Using the Generic Windows 10 WIA Driver (Free, Basic)

Step 1: Connect the Scanner

  • Plug in the UMAX 5800 via USB.
  • Open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Click "Add a printer or scanner."
  • Wait. Windows 10 might list it as "Unknown Device" or "UMAX Scanner."

Step 2: Force the WIA Driver

  • If it shows as "Unknown," click "The scanner that I want isn't listed."
  • Select "Add a local scanner or network scanner."
  • Choose "Generic Scanner" and "WIA Driver."
  • Complete the wizard.

Step 3: Scan

  • Open "Windows Scan" from the Microsoft Store or "Windows Fax and Scan."
  • Select the UMAX 5800 from the source list.
  • Note: You will likely get an error saying "Scanner not connected" if you try to scan high resolution. If this happens, reduce DPI to 200 or lower.

Option 3: UMAX VistaScan (Old – Not Recommended)

If you have the original VistaScan CD (v6.x or v7.x), you can try:

  1. Run setup in Windows 7 Compatibility Mode.
  2. Right-click setup.exe → Properties → Compatibility → Run as Windows 7 / XP SP3.
  3. After install, do not auto-start the driver. Instead, manually point Windows to the .inf file in C:\UMAX\VistaScan.

⚠️ Very unstable on Windows 10 64-bit – frequent crashes.
