The East Coast Gems (Atlantic & Gulf)
15. Sleeping Bear Dunes – Michigan (Lake Michigan)
Uncle Chester says: “The most beautiful freshwater beach in the world.”
Yes, a landlocked state can have a top-10 US beach. Sleeping Bear Dunes has tall, climbable dunes that tumble straight into the crystal-clear waters of Lake Michigan. The beach at Glen Haven is pristine, and because it’s fresh water, there’s no salt, no sharks, and no jellyfish. Uncle Chester’s challenge: try climbing the 450-foot dune. Your legs will hate you. Your eyes will thank you.

The East Coast Charmers
6. Coast Guard Beach, Massachusetts Part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. The water is brisk (to put it mildly), but the scenery is unbeatable. Take the shuttle from the parking lot and enjoy the dramatic dunes. Ka'anapali Beach, Maui, Hawaii : A tropical paradise
7. Main Beach, New York The Hamptons aren’t just for celebrities. Main Beach offers wide stretches of pristine sand and some of the best wave riding on the Atlantic. Go early to beat the crowds.
8. Virginia Beach, Virginia A concrete boardwalk and a lively atmosphere. It’s a "something for everyone" kind of town. Don't miss the King Neptune statue.
9. Ocean City, Maryland The quintessential East Coast boardwalk experience. Thrashers French Fries, saltwater taffy, and a beach that goes on forever.
10. Hilton Head Island, South Carolina Lowcountry vibes. It’s quieter, surrounded by palmettos and marshland. Great for biking on the hard-packed sand at low tide.
The Man Behind the Tan
Uncle Chester isn’t your typical travel blogger. He’s a retired coast-guard veteran with 40 years of sand between his toes. He doesn't care about VIP clubs or overpriced cocktails. He cares about three things: Sand Quality, Water Clarity, and Scenery.
"I've walked every coastline from the rocky shores of Maine to the volcanic sands of Hawaii," Chester says. "If it’s on this list, it’s worth the trip. If it’s not, keep driving."
Here are Uncle Chester’s picks for the Top 20 Beaches in the USA.
18. Sleeping Bear Dunes, Michigan – The Freshwater Wonder
Uncle Chester insists: “You haven’t done beaches until you’ve done a Great Lakes beach.” Lake Michigan’s water is shockingly clear, and the dunes tower 450 feet above the shore. Climb the Dune Climb, then collapse onto the pebbled shores of Glen Haven. It feels like an ocean without salt or sharks.
10. Cannon Beach – Oregon
Uncle Chester says: “Haystack Rock makes you feel like you’re in a movie. Because you are.”
You’ve seen The Goonies, right? That’s Cannon Beach. The iconic Haystack Rock rises 235 feet from the surf, surrounded by tide pools full of starfish and anemones. The beach is huge, windswept, and dramatic. Uncle Chester advises: the water is freezing year-round (55°F max). This is a walk-and-gawk beach, not a swim beach. Also, bring a sweater even in August.
