  6. Once downloaded, you will see categorized folders: Brick, Concrete, Fabric, Flooring, Glass, Leather, Metal, Plastic, Stone, Tile, Wallpaper, Wood, and more.

Pro Tip: You can relocate the library via the V-Ray configuration paths. Do not store it on a network drive; latency will cause loading freezes.

Performance and Memory Management

One concern with vast libraries is RAM usage. V-Ray 6 introduces Texture Tiling and Mip-mapping controls.

When you use the Library, V-Ray does not load the full 4K texture immediately. It loads a proxy preview. Only at render time does it stream the high-res maps. You can globally set a limit (e.g., "Max texture resolution: 2048px") for the entire library, forcing all materials to down-res for fast test renders.

If you’ve recently upgraded to V-Ray 6, you might have noticed things look a little different. One of the biggest changes is how we access our beloved textures. The standard preset library has officially moved into the Chaos Cosmos Browser.

Here’s everything you need to know to navigate the new library and speed up your workflow. 1. Where Did My Materials Go?

In previous versions, you might have been used to a separate library window. In V-Ray 6, Chaos has unified the experience. To find your presets, simply click the Browse Materials in Cosmos button. This gives you instant access to thousands of high-quality, render-ready materials without leaving your interface. 2. The Power of Chaos Cosmos

By integrating the library into Chaos Cosmos, you aren't just getting "textures"—you're getting smart assets.

Search & Filter: Easily find specific finishes like "Polished Concrete" or "Weathered Oak." vray 6 material library

Drag-and-Drop: Once you find a material you like, simply drag it into your Asset Editor or directly onto your geometry.

Automatic Updates: Assets in the Cosmos browser are constantly being refined and updated by the Chaos team. 3. Customizing Your Library

While the presets are great, most pros need to tweak them. Once you import a material from the library:

Layer-Based Control: V-Ray materials are layer-based, allowing you to simulate anything from plastic to glass by adjusting reflection, refraction, and bump maps.

Material Overrides: Use the Material Overrides feature to apply a global gray shader to your scene. This is a lifesaver for debugging lighting without getting distracted by complex textures. 4. Pro Tip: Setting Defaults

The V-Ray 6 Material Library is no longer a standalone local folder by default. Starting with V-Ray 6, the preset material library has transitioned into the Chaos Cosmos Browser, a unified, cloud-based asset hub.  1. Accessing the Library 

To access the materials in V-Ray 6, you must use the Chaos Cosmos Browser: 

Icon: Look for the Cosmos icon (a blue "C") in your V-Ray toolbar.

Categories: Assets are organized by space (e.g., living rooms) and material type (e.g., metals, woods, fabrics).

Legacy Folders: If you have older materials, they are typically stored at \Documents\V-Ray Material Library on Windows. You can still load these as custom folders via the directory button in your asset editor.  2. Working with Materials  Title Analysis of the V-Ray 6 Material Library:

Download & Apply: Materials are cloud-based. You must download them within the browser before dragging and dropping them directly onto your 3D models or into the material editor.

Offline Use: Once downloaded, materials are saved locally on your machine and can be used without an active internet connection.

The V-Ray 6 engine introduced several shading enhancements to its material library: 

Thin Film Layer: A new toggle in the V-Ray Material allows you to create iridescent effects like soap bubbles or oil spills.

Faster Subsurface Scattering (SSS): A new mode renders translucent objects, like skin or wax, more quickly and smoothly.

Texture Batch Load: You can now add multiple textures at once using the VRayMultiSubTex node to create rapid variations.  4. Creating Custom Libraries 

You can build your own library to store frequently used shaders: 

Open Asset Editor: Right-click in the material tab to create a new generic material.

Define Settings: Adjust Diffuse, Reflection, and Bump properties to match your needs.

Save as VRMAT: Export your materials as .vrmat files to a dedicated project folder to keep them portable.
