Unlocking Disc-Based Media: A Comprehensive Guide to the Xreveal Decryption Key Database

1. Overview

The Xreveal Decryption Key Database is a centralized, high-availability repository designed to store, manage, and serve cryptographic keys for the Xreveal platform. It acts as the secure bridge between encrypted data assets and authorized users, ensuring rapid decryption access while maintaining strict integrity and access control protocols.

3.3 Database File Format

| Field | Description | |-------|-------------| | Header | Magic bytes (XRDB), version (e.g., 0x02), timestamp | | Key section | Encrypted with a built-in public key (hardcoded in Xreveal.exe) | | Payload | JSON or binary map of disc_id → VUK and MKB_version → processing keys | | Signature | RSA signature to prevent tampering |

The database is not human-readable without reverse engineering the client. Xreveal Decryption Key Database

Manual Updates (Free Tier)

Free users can manually update the database using the Community Key Database (KEYDB) . Here’s the workflow:

  1. Navigate to the Xreveal settings > Key Database tab.
  2. Download the latest KEYDB.cfg file from a community mirror (often linked from the Doom9 forums or VLC’s official page).
  3. In Xreveal, click "Import from KEYDB.cfg."
  4. Xreveal parses the file, verifies the keys, and adds them to its internal hashed database.
  5. Alternatively, point Xreveal to the KEYDB.cfg location, and it will monitor it for changes.

7.2 “Volume ID Mismatch – Wrong Key”

The "Auto-Key Retrieval" Trick

If you have a disc that Xreveal cannot decrypt, and you have access to MakeMKV (which is free while in beta), you can: Unlocking Disc-Based Media: A Comprehensive Guide to the

This feature is groundbreaking—it turns third-party software into a key source for Xreveal.

4.2 Manual Update

  1. Help → Check for Updates (includes key database)
  2. Or download xreveal_keys_latest.xrdb from the official forum.
  3. Place in %ProgramData%\Xreveal\keys\ and restart the driver.

4.1 Offline-First Design & Long-Term Preservation

Commercial decryption software dies when the company shuts down its servers. Xreveal’s database, stored locally and exchangeable via plaintext files, is future-proof. Even if the Xreveal project stops tomorrow, users can still use the last known database and manually add keys for new discs. Manual Updates (Free Tier) Free users can manually

For archivists preserving hundreds of terabytes of optical media, this is non-negotiable. The database becomes a permanent asset file, portable across installations and even across different decryption software (since Xreveal can export keys to MakeMKV format and vice versa).

Part 3: Where Do the Keys Come From? The Ecosystem of Key Extraction

The million-dollar question: Who populates the Xreveal Decryption Key Database?

Unlike commercial solutions (AnyDVD HD, DVDFab Passkey) where keys are provided exclusively by the vendor under a subscription model, Xreveal uses a hybrid approach:
